4 Simple Tips To Keep Your Succulents Alive

Succulents are adorable plants that may wither if not taken care of properly. These four tips may help you keep them alive and healthy.

For beginners, cacti and other succulent plants are the usual options to get started in raising plants. Their varied shapes, unique colors, and low-maintenance constitution make them perfect for indoors and tabletop gardening. However, they can still become frail and die when not taken care of properly.

Sure, succulents might be easier to take care of than other plants, but that doesn’t mean you can leave them without water in a shady or sunny spot. To keep your succulents alive, consider these four tips:

Give Them Ample Sunlight

It is no secret that succulents can survive in dry climates, which is why you’ll find larger variants in desserts. While they are relatively hardy against shade, leaving them without sunlight for too long may kill them. Like most plants, ample sunlight is crucial for your succulents’ health, growth, and glow.

Place your potted plants close to an indirect sunlight source, such as a window. Doing so will keep them from wilting because of too much heat. For example, bedrooms at The Rise’s units have floor-to-ceiling windows suitable for plants to receive ample sunlight:

The overall architectural design of the condominium development also allows adequate natural sunlight to come in and illuminate all units.

For bigger homes, similar to the bungalows and two-story houses in Makati, homeowners may use their porch area as the sunlight spot for their succulents.

Say Goodbye To Misting

Cacti and other similar plants can thrive without much water. But while that is true, using a spray bottle to avoid “overwatering” might do more damage than good to your plants. Misting might seem a safe way to water them, but it may cause mold growth and brittle roots. Instead of watering the leaves, water the soil to allow water to seep in through the roots and keep the soil moist.

Place your potted succulents on a dish filled with water. Doing so will effectively water your plants without over or under watering them. Plus, you’ll keep their leaves dry and prevent rotting and wilting.

Touch the top layer of the soil to check whether it is dry or wet. If the soil is wet, take your succulent out to let it dry. If the soil gets too dry, place your plant back on its watering dish. During colder months, do this watering method every two weeks.

Place Them In Containers With Drain Holes

To ensure that the watering method mentioned above is effective, choose planters with drain holes. The drain holes allow the water to be absorbed through the soil and roots. They also let your soil reduce excess moisture that may cause muddiness and rot.

Use Well-draining Soil

If you bought succulents to take care of at home, purchase well-draining soil for repotting your plants. Avoid using tropical potting soil or dirt from your backyard as these hold water that may be damaging for your succulents. If you can’t find potting mix specified for cacti and other similar plants in your local garden store, make your own by mixing regular potting soil with pumice, coco peat, and carbonized rice hull.

Overall, succulent plants are more low-maintenance and hardy than other indoor greens. Still, they need more love and care to grow happily and healthily. Consider these four tips to keep your succulent plants alive and robust.
