Liver cancer triggers inflammation and scarring in the liver. It causes loss of appetite, mental depression, and in severe cases jaundice. Since current treatments aren’t very effective, lots of patients have to consider costly and risky liver transplants. These transplants can lead the body to reject the new liver and get infections. That’s why it’s crucial to find better ways to treat liver cancer. Right now, scientists are studying mesenchymal stem cells as a possible solution.

What are Mesenchymal Stem Cells?

Mesenchymal stem cells are sourced from the early developmental mesoderm, it can be found in multiple body tissues like the skin, blood, placenta, amniotic fluid, muscle, dental pulp, breast milk, umbilical cord, and bone marrow.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells’ (MSCs) Potential to Differentiate into Various Tissues:

  • Bone
  • Adipose (Fat) Tissue
  • Muscle
  • Nerve
  • Myocardium (Heart)
  • Liver
  • Cornea
  • Trachea
  • Skin
  • Cartilage

MSCs are gaining popularity in treatment due to their immense ability to self-renew and their directional differentiation potential.

Compared with existing treatments, there are many advantages of Mesenchymal stem cell transplantation therapy including low immunogenicity. It doesn’t trigger a strong immune response in the body. This is highly desirable for use in therapies because it means the body is less likely to reject the substance as foreign.

Mesenchymal stem cells also have immunomodulatory effects that assist the body in regulating immune function, leading to less inflammation. It also can migrate and concentrate in the body where there is tissue damage or injury. It has homing abilities to the site of the injury. This is crucial in targeted treatment and effective tissue repair.

The capacity of mesenchymal stem cells for tissue repair is also immense. It promotes the healing and regeneration of tissues.

Compared with conventional treatments, mesenchymal stem cell therapy transplantation has fewer ethical problems.

Besides, studies have shown that MSCs also improved complications of LC such as ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, and liver failure.

MSC transplantation is a potential strategy for Liver cancer treatment.

Liver cancer is a progressive disease, and there are currently no clinical drugs for its treatment.

Liver transplantation is effective, however, it has so many limitations and it is too expensive. Making medical researchers look into the potential of MSC as a cure. In various clinical applications, an animal model experiment showed that a 7-day consecutive tail vein injection of UC-MSCs was able to significantly improve liver function in carbon tetrachloride-treated mice.

As a result, eleven RCTs were enrolled for meta-analysis and systematic evaluation of the efficacy and safety of Mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of Liver cancer. The results show that MSC infusion did have a significant impact in improving the liver function of patients. As seen in their reduced Model for End-stage liver disease (MELD)score and increased serum albumin (ALB) levels, which is a protein that is produced by the liver.

Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, which is a measure of liver function, and an increase in serum albumin (ALB) levels, which is a protein produced by the liver. These improvements suggest a positive response to treatment or intervention, potentially indicating better liver function and overall health.

In conclusion, MSC is safe and effective for treating LC. However, establishing a standard treatment protocol is crucial to maximize MSC’s potential. This includes optimizing the re-infusion time point, route, frequency, and dose. Such standardization will enhance our understanding and improve therapeutic outcomes
