PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is an endocrine and reproductive disease in women who are in their bearing age. PCOS causes women to have irregular menstrual patterns and leads to infertility. Many women who have PCOS also suffer from obesity and insulin resistance that leads to type 2 diabetes. If not given proper care and attention, the uterine tissue causes problems that might lead to endometrial cancer.

Medical science still has to solve the main cause of PCOS. It remains a genetic and environmental problem that is triggered by immune system factors. It impacts the auto-immune system and as of the present time, there is still no effective treatment for PCOS. The only way to manage the symptoms is through lifestyle changes like exercise and changes in eating habits. Most women with PCOS also rely on drugs like oral contraceptives and pills like metformin and pioglitazone to relieve symptoms like glucose intolerance.

Most of the pills given to women with PCOS do not solve the problem completely, which is why medical researchers and doctors are looking into using Stem Cell Therapy. By studying Human Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells medical researchers are hoping to reach a breakthrough.

It is with the belief that mesenchymal stem cells are filled with anti-inflammatory properties that could be used as an ovarian injection to reduce chronic inflammation often experienced by PCOS patients.

Stem Cells and Ovarian Cancer

There is an emerging role for stem cell therapy against ovarian cancer due to the high mortality rate for women being diagnosed with it. In the United States alone there are 21, 500 women who suffer from ovarian cancer and 15, 500 women succumb to it.

Current medical practice is still unable to detect the disease in its early stages, and it is also the kind of disease that has a high rate or recurring. Scientists also found out that ovarian cancer rises due to a rare population of stem cell-like cells that maintain their tumor potential despite therapy. Most women have tumor-initiating cells embedded in the body leading to cancer development.

Abnormal stem cells inside the body are automatic and could not be avoided, but the solution is also believed to be inside the human cells as well. We just need to unleash the capacity of stem cell therapy, we need to understand how to use the self-renewal capacity of our cells. We need to go deeply into researching the ability of the body to regenerate so we can combat tumors that arise inside it.

The study of stem cells and what we can do with it will directly benefit reproductive biology. Stem cells are offering the process of improving reproductive organ function and fertility that would one day lead us to cure gynecologic diseases like PCOS.

Why Stem Cell Therapy for PCOS?

Stem cells have the capacity to self renew and differentiate into different cell types so it can reach its desired state. It means that it can be applied as a cure to different parts of the body, it can be used for tissue regeneration and even tissue replacement in times of injuries. Stem cells have profound therapeutic applications including offering a cure for spinal cord injury, liver cirrhosis, and heart diseases.

PCOS patients often suffer from symptoms like insulin resistance leading to obesity and other serious health issues like cardiovascular diseases and hypertension, as well as metabolic syndromes and mesenchymal stem cells are being looked into as a source of healing. There is now various research when it comes to Diabetes and Obesity in relation to stem cell therapy. With proper identification and consultation with experts, strategies could be implemented to halt the symptoms caused by PCOS.

Stem cell therapy would one day help solve infertility, complications caused by obesity, reducing instances of miscarriages by helping renew and strengthen the DNA.
