Stroke Patients and the Power of Stem Cell Therapy

Stroke is treated in the emergency room, you need to arrive within 3 hours of the first symptom of ischemic stroke, and healthcare workers will inject the clout-busting drugs to break up the blood clots.

However, not everyone is fortunate to recognize the signs of stroke, let alone bring themselves to the hospital immediately. And when this happens, the process of recovery becomes difficult.

Thankfully, highly advanced forms of treatment like modified stem cells are now made available in clinics and reputable hospitals.

People disabled by stroke were able to show substantial recovery after receiving modified adult stem cells injections in the brain.

One patient named Sonia Olea Coontz suffered from a stroke back in 2011. It affected her legs and right arm. But after receiving modified adult stem cells in her brain as part of a clinical trial, she professes that her limbs “ woke up”.

“My right arm wasn’t working at all,” said Coontz. “It felt like it was almost dead. My right leg worked, but not well.”

“I used a wheelchair a lot.”-

Not anymore, though.

“After my surgery, they woke up,”

Is Injecting Stem cells in the brain safe?

Stem cells have been around for more than 20 years now, and since then there has been a lot of scientific developments and improvements in the way doctors and researchers understand it.

Injecting modified, human, adult stem cells into the brains of Chronic Stroke Patients are already proven safe, not only that it is also effective in restoring motor function according to the findings released by Stanford University School of Medicine.

In the clinical trial that investigators have conducted, all of the patients who suffered from their first and only stroke between six months and three years before receiving the injection remained conscious under light anesthesia.

The procedure involved drilling a small hole into the skull.

The next day, the patients were able to go home. More than three-quarters of the stroke participants suffered from slight headaches afterward, due to the surgical procedure and the physical constraints of the procedure. But no further side effects were noticed after the stem cells were injected. No major adverse effects were observed.

Meaningful, Significant Clinical Trial

While this was just a small trial, the clinical results are meaningful and provide much-needed hope for stroke patients. Those who received stem cells showed significant improvement

This brings immense hope to people who were not able to receive immediate treatment during stroke’s acute phase.

18 stroke patients received the SB623 cells — mesenchymal stem cells derived from the bone marrow of two donors and then modified to beneficially alter the cells’ ability to restore neurologic function.

The secret of their recovery could be attributed to the regeneration and reactivation of nearby nervous tissue aided by the mesenchymal stem cells.

Some of the stroke patients who were previously using a wheelchair are now able to walk according to Steinberg, the Bernard and Ronni Lacroute-William Randolph Hearst Professor in Neurosurgery and Neurosciences.

“We know these cells don’t survive for more than a month or so in the brain,” he added. “Yet we see that patients’ recovery is sustained for greater than one year and, in some cases now, more than two years.”

We thought those brain circuits were dead. And we’ve learned that they’re not.

More importantly, most of these patients are already in their 60s, the healing occurred regardless of the stroke patient’s age.

The elderly tend to not respond to treatments well, but in this case, even those in their 70s showed significant improvement.

This could revolutionize our concept of what happens after not only stroke but traumatic brain injury and even neurodegenerative disorders. It is all about finding ways to jumpstart the brain circuits and heal long-term damages.

The SB623 cells were provided by SanBio Inc., a biotechnology company based in Mountain View, California. SanBio also funded and helped in designing the trial, but did not participate in its execution.

Stanford’s Department of Neurosurgery also supported the work.

Receivers of billions of stem cells both attest to the truth and efficacy of this rejuvenating and immensely powerful treatment.

Michael York a highly respected actor became an advocate for stem cells after receiving treatment for his Amyloidosis and Multiple Myeloma.

While 75-year-old Lourdes Duque Baron experienced the healing of her Osteoporosis by way of stem cell therapy.

Lourdes Duque Baron’s book titled New Breed of Homo Sapiens is set to be released in 2022.
