Is Injecting Stem cells in the brain safe?

Injecting modified, human, adult stem cells into the brains of Chronic Stroke Patients are already proven safe, not only that it is also effective in restoring motor function according to the findings released by Stanford University School of Medicine.
In the clinical trial that investigators have conducted, all of the patients who suffered from their first and only stroke between six months and three years before receiving the injection remained conscious under light anesthesia.
The procedure involved drilling a small hole into the skull.
The next day, the patients were able to go home. More than three-quarters of the stroke participants suffered from slight headaches afterward, due to the surgical procedure and the physical constraints of the procedure. But no further side effects were noticed after the stem cells were injected. No major adverse effects were observed.

18 stroke patients received the SB623 cells — mesenchymal stem cells derived from the bone marrow of two donors and then modified to beneficially alter the cells’ ability to restore neurologic function.

Some of the stroke patients who were previously using a wheelchair are now able to walk according to Steinberg, the Bernard and Ronni Lacroute-William Randolph Hearst Professor in Neurosurgery and Neurosciences.
“We know these cells don’t survive for more than a month or so in the brain,” he added. “Yet we see that patients’ recovery is sustained for greater than one year and, in some cases now, more than two years.”
We thought those brain circuits were dead. And we’ve learned that they’re not.
More importantly, most of these patients are already in their 60s, the healing occurred regardless of the stroke patient’s age.
The elderly tend to not respond to treatments well, but in this case, even those in their 70s showed significant improvement.
This could revolutionize our concept of what happens after not only stroke but traumatic brain injury and even neurodegenerative disorders. It is all about finding ways to jumpstart the brain circuits and heal long-term damages.
The SB623 cells were provided by SanBio Inc., a biotechnology company based in Mountain View, California. SanBio also funded and helped in designing the trial, but did not participate in its execution.
Stanford’s Department of Neurosurgery also supported the work.
