According to a Manila Bulletin article, suspicions arose that Sheynnis was perceived as being opposed to the Nicaraguan government. In simple terms, they believe she is anti-government, resulting in her being denied any homecoming activities. This led to poignant moments when Filipinos warmly welcomed her, with a Nicaraguan individual presenting her country’s flag. Imagine being the first Miss Universe from your country but unable to celebrate with your beloved compatriots and family. It’s a scenario that left Sheynnis in tears, with the absence of not just her, but her entire entourage being prohibited from returning.

Prior to her Miss Universe triumph, Sheynnis was already a renowned model in her homeland. She had previously participated in Miss World 2021, reaching the top 40. Her journey to becoming Miss Universe seemed destined, evident from her early successes, including winning college pageants while studying Mass Communication. Sheynnis’ eloquence and ability to articulate her thoughts undoubtedly contributed to her victory. Despite her humble beginnings, facing struggles and bullying in school due to financial constraints, Sheynnis advocated for mental health awareness, a cause she championed throughout her pageant journey.

Her winning gown, inspired by the Virgin Mary and adorned with elements from the flags of Nicaragua and El Salvador, garnered attention during the competition. Sheynnis’ devout Catholic faith, reminiscent of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, resonated with many. She emphasized the importance of prayer, attributing her success not to herself but to a higher purpose, her fellow delegates, and her country.

Sheynnis Palacios captivated both judges and Filipino supporters alike with her profound vision and compassionate heart. Despite the challenges she faced, her triumph stands as a testament to resilience and grace in the face of adversity.
