The International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinic Trial Network reported the first case of an HIV female patient who was cured using a dual stem cell transplant. Using an umbilical blood cord transplant combined with a half-matched bone marrow transplant.

The IMPAACT P1007 researchers were ecstatic with the results. The research team presented their findings at the 29th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic infections this 2022.

The study participant is a middle-aged, mixed-race woman who is based in New York and stopped medicating with antiretroviral therapy at 37 months post-transplant. Apart from HIV, she was also suffering from Leukemia which she developed in 2017.

The team of researchers focused their study on observing HIV patients who undergo cord blood cells transplantation, or those with a CCR5 genetic mutation for treatment of hematopoietic disease, cancer, and other auto-immune diseases.

This particular genetic mutation is what results in T cells without CCR5 co-receptors. HIV needs to use these co-receptors so it can effectively infect T cells. The basis of the study is that chemotherapy is given to people with cancers and other illnesses, followed by transplant using stem cells that carry CCR5 mutation, which has the ability to change the immune system making it genetically resistant to HIV.

This is not the first case where someone was healed from HIV. The first person who was healed from HIV/AIDS using a stem cell transplant was a man tagged as the Berlin Patient in 2009. The second one is residing in London with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This will be the third case that which an HIV patient was healed using stem cell therapy after getting dual stem cell transplantation.

Because of these positive results from clinical trials, there is now a good reason to believe that HIV remission is possible with the help of stem cell transplants, including other diseases.

However, before any HIV patient could avail of this treatment, they need thorough consultation with doctors who are going to explain the process. They also need to find stem cell donors that will match them.

Despite the fact that there are challenges in taking hold of stem cell therapy treatments for HIV, this does not dampen the spirit of the scientific community with regard to finding a long-term cure for HIV.

What is Dual Stem Cell Therapy?

Dual stem cell therapy or Haplo-cord transplant is a new kind of transplant strategy. It makes use of transfusion of stem cells using the umbilical cord of neonates, it is then combined with the bone marrow of a matching adult donor.

This treatment is usually recommended for patients who already have high-risk cancers and those that require less restrictive human leucocyte antigen. The cells of the umbilical cord have the CCR5 mutation, and the adult stem cells don’t require an identical HLA matching. This kind is hard to get for patients who are of mixed ancestry or of African descent.

Stem Cell Advocates

When Selma Blair first came out in the public to speak about her MS diagnosis back in 2018, it seems as though there is no cure in sight.

But with the help of medical experts, the actress was able to pursue an aggressive course of chemotherapy. But it was stem cell therapy that allowed her to experience immense progress. She was given an advanced cure in the form of a stem cell transplant that allowed her immune system to restart.

Stem Cell therapy also led to the incremental improvements that allow Lourdes Duque Baron and Michael York to continue living with amazing energy and boosted immune systems.

Receivers of billions of stem cells both attest to the truth and efficacy of this rejuvenating and immensely powerful treatment.

Michael York a highly respected actor became an advocate for stem cells after receiving treatment for his Amyloidosis and Multiple Myeloma.
